-Portrait in Art-

Portrait in Art was Takuma Watanabe’s first solo exhibition, presented roughly one year after he began painting.

The works were created during the global lockdown of 2020, a period in which everyday life suddenly slowed and people were left facing long hours of interior time.

Within this unusual stillness, painting emerged as a form of discovery.

Rather than depicting individuals, these works function as portraits of emotion, memory, and inner time.

Each canvas carries intense color and gestural movement, suggesting fragments of lived experience. When installed together in a grid, the paintings no longer operate as isolated images but form a larger perceptual field — a constellation of inner states.

Seen as a whole, the installation resembles a map of consciousness, where countless emotional particles gather into a single visual universe.
